Family of missing man are in Aspen, searching for a sign

The family of George Aldrich, who has been missing without atrace since Saturday, decided Thursday to offer a $5,000 award for anyinformation leading to his whereabouts.
“Even just a lead would be so nice,” said his father, GeorgeAldrich Sr.. “There is somebody in this town that knows where he went. Somebodyhas to know.”
Aldrich, 28, was last seen at Eric’s bar in Aspen onSaturday, Nov. 27 between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. He was with a group of casualfriends, none of whom remember him saying good-bye or leaving the bar.
Law enforcement and search and rescue personnel from theupper valley have been working on the case since Monday, when Aldrich did notshow up for his job as a lift operator at the Snowmass ski area.
Aspen police are asking local property managers and ownersto check vacant or little-used properties for anything that might be amiss orunusual. Police also are eager to watch any recent surveillance video fromdowntown Aspen that might show Aldrich, even in passing.
Aldrich lives in employee housing at Club Commons inSnowmass Village. He didn’t have a car and was using Roaring ForkTransportation Authority buses to get around the valley. Much of the searchefforts thus far have revolved around the thought that perhaps somethinghappened to him as he tried to get home from Aspen Saturday night.
The elder Aldrich and the missing man’s older brother, SeanAldrich, flew into Aspen Tuesday from Rhode Island in an effort to find“Georgie,” who moved to the valley from Cranston, R.I. on Nov. 1 to become alift operator, snowboard for the winter, and eventually try to find a local jobin marketing. Aldrich Jr. wanted to make a life here, they said.
The Aldriches have spent their time in Aspen conferring withlocal investigators, re-tracing Aldrich Jr.’s steps on Saturday night, talkingwith his recently-made friends who were with him at Eric’s, and watchingsurveillance video from local establishments.
Aldrich Sr. also did an interview with a television stationfrom Denver on Thursday, in an effort to spread the word about his son.
“They asked what would be the best thing and the best thingis that he pops back in town and says ‘Hey, I’ve been in Reno. I left on aprivate jet with this beautiful 40-year-old woman and you know, sorry,’”Aldrich said.
But he doubts that is what has happened.
“I’ve got to find him, whether he’s hurt or not hurt,” hesaid, his voice breaking and eyes watering. “That’s it. We’ll be here until wefind him.”
“He’s a good kid,” Sean Aldrich said quietly. “Hopefully wefind him.”
Both Aldriches were highly complimentary of the extensiveefforts by local officials to find their missing son and brother. They saidAspen Skiing Co. officials have been very gracious, and that, in fact, everyonethey’ve met in Aspen and Snowmass has been warm and generous.
But they are at a complete loss as to what has happened toGeorge Aldrich, Jr.
“It’s been such a dead-end, it’s mind-boggling,” his fathersaid. “I was very, very, very upbeat when I first got here, thinking maybe hejust missed a day of work. But now we have no idea.”
They have since learned that George Aldrich, Jr. worked atthe Snowmass ski area on Saturday and then took a 6 p.m. bus to Aspen to go tothe live concert at the base of Aspen Mountain.
Aldrich was with his roommate from Club Commons that night,as the two had become good friends since meeting a month ago. But the roommate,who had to work the next day, caught a bus back to Snowmass about 8:30 or 9:00p.m. and left Aldrich at Eric’s with a loose group of his newly-made friendsfrom Snowmass, whom the Aldrich family also has spoken with.
“They said he had a couple of beers and a shot,” SeanAldrich said. “He doesn’t drink a lot.”
One of the friends took a photo of Aldrich about 10:30 p.m.at Eric’s, which police have distributed.
“After that specific time, nobody really knows where hewent,” George Aldrich, Sr. said. “Did he hop in a car? Did he go up themountain a little? Did he hop a wrong bus toward Glenwood? Did he go toSnowmass? We’re just trying to identify where he went.”
Sean and George Aldrich also said all of George Jr.’spossessions are still in his room at Club Commons, including his new snowboardsand boots.
“He was really excited about being out here,” Sean Aldrichsaid. “He loved snowboarding.”
George Aldrich, Jr. has a degree in marketing from Johnsonand Wales University and once spent a year studying at the school’s Denvercampus, which is when he first spent time in Aspen and the Rocky Mountains.
“He loved Denver, he loved Aspen, he loved the mountains,”George Aldrich Sr. said. “He sent us pictures of the top of the mountain wherethey hiked up. He told his roommate he loved it. All the girls that were outwith him that night, they just really enjoyed him and said he was gentleman ...he was pulling out all his East Coast moves, I guess. He’s a smooth operator.He’s a great kid. He’s extremely intelligent. And he’s a very responsible guy.”
